Mindfulness-Based Interventions:
Implementation with Gastrointestinal
Symptoms and Disorders

A Rome Foundation Continuing Education program.
On-Demand
Cost: $75 for professionals, $50 for trainees
CE Credits: 3.0
Mindfulness-Based Interventions (MBIs) were originally introduced into healthcare settings for those, often with chronic health conditions, who were not responding adequately to traditional Western medical treatments. This training will focus on implementing MBIs adherently and competently with adult patients with gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms and disorders, including IBS and IBDs, as well as symptoms common in GI disorders (e.g., nausea, pain, reflux, etc.).

Original evidence-based MBI protocols include Mindfulness-Based- Cognitive Therapy, Stress Reduction, and Relapse Prevention. These are resource-intensive and often present engagement and compliance challenges for many with high levels of pain and distress and limited time and attention. With adaptations, however, patients can show engagement, application of skills in response to difficult experiences, and ultimately treatment response.

In this webinar, common adaptations adherent to evidence-based for people with GI symptoms and distress will be described. In addition, evidence-based MBIs for GI symptoms and disorders and the common elements and mechanisms of MBIs will be reviewed and experiential practice of brief adapted MBIs shown to benefit those with GI symptoms comorbid with anxiety will be offered. Finally, a review of resources for developing competence in teaching MBIs to patients with GI symptoms will be covered.
Following this presentation, participants will be able to:
  • Describe six intervention elements that are part of Mindfulness-Based Intervention (MBI) protocols that adhere to evidence-based practices
  • Describe four health benefits associated with MBIs in adults, focusing on patients with gastrointestinal symptoms and disorders
  • List three resources for developing adherence to and competence as a teacher of MBIs
  • List four adaptations common to MBIs shown to benefit patients with gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms
Presenter:
Chris Molnar, Ph.D.
Licensed Psychologist & Clinical Investigator
Mindful Exposure Therapy for Anxiety and Psychological Wellness Center (META Center)
Chris Molnar, Ph.D., a licensed psychologist and clinical investigator, founded Mindful Exposure Therapy for Anxiety and Psychological Wellness Center (META Center) in 2007. She completed post-doctoral fellowship training in traumatic stress, neuroscience, and psycho-physiology and is an expert in the assessment and treatment of anxiety, OCD, PTSD, emotional, and stress-related conditions using evidence-based practices. She has completed training to teach both Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and has also developed adaptations for highly distressed clients, using Relational Mindfulness Practices (MBPs), to meet the needs of people in both individual and group therapy settings. At META Center, she offers integrative interventions grounded in findings about the brain, emotion, and learning to facilitate mental and behavioral habit change, even in the face of severe distress. Before founding META Center, she served as a clinical investigator and therapist supported by grants from the National Institute of Health and other agencies. She is also on the editorial board of Behavior Therapy and serves the public in many ways, through professional presentations, workshops, publications, and affiliations.
Target Audience
This presentation is intended for licensed mental health professionals and advanced graduate student trainees seeking licensure. The instructional level of this presentation is beginner.

Note: This workshop does not require attendees to have a formal mindfulness practice.

About the Rome Foundation
The Rome Foundation is an independent not for profit 501(c) 3 organization that provides support for activities designed to create scientific data and educational information to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of Disorders of Gut-Brain Interaction (DGBI). Our mission is to improve the lives of people with DGBI.

Over the last 30 years, the Rome organization has sought to legitimize and update our knowledge of the DGBIs. This has been accomplished by bringing together scientists and clinicians from around the world to classify and critically appraise the science of gastrointestinal function and dysfunction. This knowledge permits clinical scientists to make recommendations for diagnosis and treatment that can be applied in research and clinical practice.
