Dr. van Tilburg is a world-renowned expert in psychogastroenterology. She has over 200 scholarly publications in her name and has participated in developing national guidelines for diagnosis, referral, treatment, training and research related to pediatric Disorders of Gut-Brain Interaction (DGBI). Dr. van Tilburg has advised the FDA, EMA, NIH, and Medicaid. She is a previous elected council member of the American Neurogastroenterology and Motility Society and holds position at numerous other organizations such as the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition and the Association of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition Nurses. In addition, she has served on both the Rome IV and V committees charged with revising the pediatric DGBI Diagnostic Criteria. Dr. van Tilburg was one of the first to test hypnosis in children with DGBI. Her hypnosis protocol for pediatric functional abdominal pain is in use by hundreds of experts all over the world and has been translated in several languages. She also has been involved in several randomized controlled trials of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for the treatment of pediatric functional abdominal pain. Dr. van Tilburg holds full professor appointments in Medicine and Social Work at Marshall University, the University of North Carolina, and the University of Washington. Dr. van Tilburg is also the Vice Chair of Research at Marshall’s School of Medicine where she oversees, develops, and advances research initiatives as well as fosters a culture of research, involving faculty, residents, fellows, medical students, and staff.
